For four years now, the Swiss PLAGUE PITS have been producing their Electronic music with beautiful regularity and consistently releasing it digitally and on cassettes. In 2023, YOUNG & COLD RECORDS released a compilation of some of the early tracks on vinyl for the first time and is now presenting new recordings with the album ‘Escalator To The Abattoir’, which show both musical continuity and stylistic development.
With „Nuit Blanche“ you immediately get the impression that more modern sounds have been added to the pure Electro-Wave in the style of the 80s. With „More Than Devotion“, however, listeners are immediately reminded of the Synthpop of Mark Lane, only for „Against Nature“ to bring back the less wavy Electro sound that labels like Kommando 6 brought to the music market in the 2000s. „Summer Home In The Colonies“ then combines old and new and could well have been released on the label Das Drehmoment side by side with acts such as Suicide Booth or Makina Girgir.
Different influences alternate from track to track, whereby the basis always remains the sound of the 80s despite contemporary echoes. The production is very clear and structured. „Purgatory“, a track that can be categorized somewhere between The Klinik and early Das Kombinat, definitely has what it takes to be a hit in the clubs. With „Come Undone“, there is also a song that will make the Old-School-Wavers happy who miss their early 80s Wave. The title track „Escalator To The Abattoir“ ends the short album with a seven-and-a-half-minute epic-experimental track that also shows the darker side of PLAGUE PITS.
A really versatile and very exciting Electro-album that presents a clear further development of the Swiss band and will satisfy old and new listeners alike.
